Whether it’s
excelling at tennis or winning a male beauty contest, Bikram Saluja
has always been up there with the best of them. When he exploded into
the world of fashion a decade ago, everyone was pretty awestruck with
his sheer male magnificence.
He went on to win the
Graviera Mr. India, after which he was randomly written about the
world over as one of the most handsome men… true enough.
More in the news
later for his seemingly perfect relationship with model Anupama Verma,
he managed to not let his career go off kilter.
After a while, he
stepped off the ramp – where he was a smashing success – and stepped
on to a stage of a different kind – theatre. After doing plays like
Vasavadatta, The Big A and Kiski biwi kiska shohar, where Bikram’s
efforts were appreciated by a select few, he decided to try a hand at
the medium everyone dreams of – film - Khaled Mohammed’s Fiza due for
a release soon.
MEENA: The jump from
tennis to modeling and then to film has been a rather long one, not to
mention that it’s taken its time coming. What made you decide upon
something like glamour when you had a solid career on tennis going for
you?
BIKRAM: Well, I was
offered the chance to model, and it just worked out perfectly for me.
Basically, I took each day as it came. After the Graviera Mr India
contest, the ramp was the logical kind of conclusion, and since I did
well there, I stuck on.
MEENA: How did you
happen to chance upon theatre? It isn’t often that one sees someone
from the catwalk head in that direction.
BIKRAM: Once again,
it was offers that came my way. Also, people actually believed that I
would be good, because of the kind of personality I have. And it was
not so bad. In fact, if there’s a good enough play, I’m still open to
theatre.
MEENA: And then, it
was music videos and film…
BIKRAM: The music
videos were good (laughs). It was a pleasure working with someone in
the caliber of Ashaji. (Bikram is in the video of Parde mein rehne
do). It was basically a step in the direction of films, as it were.
MEENA: How did Fiza
fall in your lap?
BIKRAM: I happened to
know Khaled, and he thought I would be good for the role. I basically
play a guy who is besotted with Karisma Kapoor, and cannot see beyond
his obsession. Despite the fact that its small, it’s a very
challenging role, since it is very far from reality – I am nothing
like that at all.
MEENA: What are the
other projects you are working on?
BIKRAM: It’s all very
quiet and small right now, and there’s nothing I can talk about at
length, really. But there are a few other things in the pipeline. All
I can say is that whatever I do, I give my all to it, which I consider
my biggest weakness, as well as my biggest strength. I simply want to
be the best at whatever I do – in that respect, I’m a very competitive
guy. A hangover of my tennis days, I guess.
MEENA: What made you
give up on tennis altogether?
BIKRAM: Actually, its
something I’d rather not discuss if you don’t mind. The fact is that
I’ve come to terms with it.
