Consumer Rights

All of us have been consumers at some point or the other. In law, a consumer includes all persons, including a firm, a company, a Hindu undivided Family etc., who purchases goods or services for a price. The purchase of goods and services entitles you to certain rights. Primarily you are entitled to expect a quantity and quality of goods and services as you had asked for when you made the purchase. Of all the Laws that deal with the protection of the rights of consumers the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (the Act) is probably the most important. This Act gives you as a consumer the most comprehensive protection against violation of your rights. This section will tell you about your rights as a consumer under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 and the courts that deal with such matters (Referred to as the Consumer Courts).
