I am scared that my fundamental rights under the Constitution can be taken away by the Constitution Review Committee. Is this possible? |

The Parliament has the powers to change the Constitution, not any other Committee. But there are certain limitations to the Parliament's powers. The Supreme Court has held that Parliament cannot change the basic structure of the Constitution. What constitutes the basic structure depends upon the Supreme Court's interpretation, but it has been held in earlier cases that our fundamental rights such as right to life, equality etc. are part of the basic structure. Hence these cannot be taken away by any changes made to the Constitution. |
