What does the Law Commission of India do? |
|||||||||||||||||
|
The Law Commission of India was set up by the Central Government in 1955 in order to recommend to the Government the reform of important laws, particularly those of general application and importance. The Law Commission merely advises the Government. It is left to the Government to take necessary steps to get the laws enacted/amended. The Law Commission has studied various aspects of law and submitted 169 reports so far. Out of these, 72 reports have been implemented, 17 reports have not been implemented and 62 reports are in different stages of consideration. The reports contain a detailed analysis of the problems with the existing law and the recommendations of the Law Commission in the form of a draft Bill. The reports are placed before the Parliament. Though the Law Commission's recommendations do not automatically become law, they are given due respect by the judiciary and researchers.
