What is the difference between an advocate and, a lawyer and a barrister?

A person should be enrolled as an "advocate" with the Bar Council in order to practice law. Any law graduate i.e. a "lawyer" can enroll himself/herself as an advocate.

A "barrister" is a person who has done a bar-at-law in England. Barristers are allowed to practice in the Indian courts.

You may also want to know about "solicitors". Lawyers who want to be solicitors should pass an examination. In India, such an examination is conducted by the Bombay High Court only.

In England, there is a clear distinction between barristers and solicitors. Solicitors advise clients and draft pleadings/documents, but engage barristers for conducting the case in the court.
