What are fundamental rights?

Fundamental rights are a set of rights which are guaranteed to you under our Constitution. These rights are available against the state i.e. the government. Your fundamental rights include the right to equality, right against exploitation, right to life, freedom of religion, speech and expression, occupation etc.

Go To Court The most important thing about your fundamental rights is that you can directly go to the Supreme Court or your High Court and file ‘writ petitions' if they are violated.

As a result of judicial interpretation, the scope of our fundamental rights has been widened. Though certain rights such as the right to a clean environment, the right to live with dignity etc. have not been listed in the Constitution, the Supreme Court has read them as a part of the right to life.
