Review
It has turned out to be a flash in the pan. Promos of Aaghaaz promised much but delivered little. Instead of being a movie with a
difference, it is just old wine in a new bottle.
The Hindi remake of D. Rama Naidu's Telugu hit Savaih is about oppression of the middle class and its disillusionment with the corrupt
system. Sunil Shetty plays a social crusader, while Sushmita Sen is the tough cop. The movie also stars Namrata Shirodkar, debutante
Shradha Nigam, Sharad Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Johny Lever, and Suman Ranganathan in a cameo appearance.
Sunil Shetty is an ambitious young man Govind who single handedly wages a war against the anti-social elements and the corrupt minions
of law. Realizing the need for a fight against such elements, he raises a clarion call to those suffering like him to come forward and
join him in his struggle.
Now Sunil is not the only one fighting the baddies. A tough woman cop, Sushmita Sen, too has vowed to crack down on the perpetrators
of law. The brave and fearless cop is every baddie's nightmare.
Govind loves her but is forced by circumstances to marry another woman. Sush's real ordeal comes when those who she loved once are up
in arms against her.
The plot is full of red herrings. Just when the plot begins to thicken, there go the love bids to the exotic locales abroad.
Funnily enough, it is from one of these songs that the bubbly and vivacious Namrata Shirodkar emerges and dances her way into Govind's
life.
Sunil's finely delineated character demands a power packed performance. But he fails to make the grade. Often he comes within an ace
of striking the right chord, but his expressionless face lets the audience down.
Sushmita Sen impresses with her acrobatic fights and breathtaking stunts that even leave the muscle flexing Shetty biting his nails.
Johny Lever and Anupam Kher chip in with their lighthearted moments.
Aaghaazmarks the directorial debut of Yogesh Ishwar who had earlier assisted Vidhoo Vinod Chopra in Parinda and 1942-A Love Story.
Although a considerable part of Aaghaazbears a close resemblance to its Telugu original, Yogesh has used his imagination to the hilt
to give the movie a fresh look. Anu Malik's music and Sameer's lyrics do not make any impression.
Aaghaaz ends up being a mindless mishmash of various elements. It is neither a crime thriller nor a romantic entertainer
