Akshay Khanna .... Raj Goyal
Urmila Matondkar .... Sargam
Ajay Devgan .... Tarang Bhardwaj

Director : Anees Bazmee

Synopsis
Raj Goyal (Akshaye Khanna) is a successful criminal lawyer with a dynamic personality and gift of the gab. Being a conscientious lawyer he remains fully committed to fighting for the innocent and bringing the culpable under the baton of law. He is not a very emotional person and does not get inclined towards women easily.

This trait, however, changes with the coming of a nubile girl Sargam (Urmila Matondakar) into his life. Sargam is a celebrity, a popular singer who has several hit albums under her belt.

Through Sargam, Raj comes to know of her childhood friend and mentor Tarang Bharadwaj (Ajay Devgan). Tarang is a talented musician with a brilliant mind. However he is a victim of circumstances. He was caught red handed at the scene of the murder of music magnet Ashwin Mehta (Vijendra Ghatge).

With no witnesses around, Tarang is the man suspected of the murder. The act implies a crime of extreme hate and means severe punishment for the culprit.

Sargam staunchly believes that Tarang has not committed a crime of such diabolical nature. She entreats Raj to plead Tarang's case in the court. Raj agrees.

After Raj comes to know of Tarang's version of the crime, he knows that the only way he can save him is by bringing the real culprit to book. But as he begins his investigations, Raj gets embroiled in a mystery that could lead to his own killing. Before he realizes it, he is being stalked by someone who doesn't want him to get at the truth. Someone, who would commit another murder to cover the previous one.
Review

Anees Bazmee-directed Deewangee is based on the novel plot of a murder accused shamming split personality to avoid the penance from law. And to this end he dupes everyone and reveals his true face only at few moments in the film.

The film, although a rehash of Hollywood hit ‘Primal Fear’ (Richard Gere and Edward Norton), has a few spellbinding moments that hit you like a bolt out of the blue. The drama in the film unfolds at a slick pace and many times catches a viewer off guard.

The first half of Deewangee is full of surprises. Particularly gripping are the courtroom scenes and the sequences between Ajay and Akshaye. The scenes featuring Seema Biswas and Ajay, especially the one when Ajay’s split personality comes to the fore, further elevate the audience interest.

Among the highlights of the film is the interval point that catches the viewer completely unaware.

However, the film strays into absurdities in the second half when Ajay lands up at the show as a co-dancer and soon thereafter, kidnaps Urmila by guising himself as her driver. The director hasn’t taken Ajay’s character to its conclusive end in the climax leaving many questions unanswered.

The film has Ajay Devgan trying his best to essay a role replete with idiosyncratic complexities. Akshaye Khanna too plays the suave lawyer with panache while Urmila seems wasted in pointless role.

All in all, Deewangee is a gritty thriller that is likely to give you goose bumps despite the poorly placed songs and red-herrings in the plot.
