Synopsis
Ramesh Sippy-produced Kuch Naa Kaho has Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan teaming up on reel for the second time.
The film has Abhishek playing the young American Indian who doesn’t care a hoot for the traditional idea of arranged marriage. Yet he
is being forced to meet a number of girls to select one as his prospective bride.
Raj (Abhishek) is a suave New Yorker who lives with his mother, Dr. Malhotra [Suhasini Mulay]. Although there is close intimacy
between the mother-son duo, the two don’t speak in same voices when it comes to the issue or Raj’s marriage.
Raj is a modern man and doesn’t believe in arranged marriages. On a visit to India for his cousin's wedding, Raj’s maternal uncle [Satish
Shah] emotionally blackmails him into agreeing to arrange meetings with eligible girls.
The responsibility to introduce Raj to these girls is given to Namrata [Aishwarya Rai], Raj's uncle's favorite employee at his design
studio. Namrata has already been at the receiving end of Raj’s antagonism and now she is out to settle the score with him
After a series of meetings with potential brides, it becomes apparent to Namrata that finding a match for this particular suitor is a
nightmare and an attempt in vain.
However, in this futile exercise, there come moments when Raj and Namrata feel deep connection with each other. But they stay mum.
So here is the story of a guy who is looking for his dream woman, not knowing that she might just be standing by his side. And here is
the story of girl who has a beautiful heart but hasn’t found her perfect mate yet.
Review
Kuch Naa Kaho has Ramesh Sippy’s son Rohan Sippy making his directorial debut. Although the movie is not a mushy teenybopper
romance, it cannot also be called a mature love story.
Abhishek plays a guy who is under pressure from his family to look for a wife and Ash plays the girl who is assigned the task of
looking for his prospective bride.
The movie is entertaining in the first half with the hero coming to India to attend his cousin’s wedding and finding himself being
made a scapegoat for marriage. And the scenes showing the tiff between Ash and Abhishek too are interesting.
The romantic angle comes when Abhishek falls for Ash. But wait, there is a tantalizer in the offing. It turns out to our hero’s
disappointment that Ash is married and has a seven-year-old son.
This is where the story gets complex. Despite her emotions Ash cannot express her true feelings to our hero. It becomes a case of love
expressed through eyes -- Kuch Naa Kaho.
In spite of an interesting storyline, the movie ends up as an average fare partly because of insipid dialogues that fail to convey the
complexity of the romance between the leading characters.
Although Ash doesn’t really look very convincing playing the mother of a seven-year-old son, Abhishek fits well into the role of a
suave New Yorker. Abhishek’s acting comes to notice in his funny pranks with Ash’s kid. His encounter with his three prospective
brides too evokes laughter.
On the whole, Kuch Naa Kaho is strewn with all the necessary ingredients that could take the audience’s fancy. There is romance
(that edges on the forbidden boundary), there is comedy, there is some catchy music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and there is drama that
brings out the complexities of the emotion called love.
