Review
“Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai” is an inconsequential romantic flick with an insipid story that hardly tugs any strings at heart.
At the center of the plot is the lovelorn Rahul (Aftab Shivdasani) who goes about following the girl of his dreams Sandhya (Amisha
Patel) every waking hour of his life. Everyday he boards the same bus that Sandhya takes and, in the bus, he makes passes at her and
casts her covert glances. He follows her like a shadow. And in this endeavor his idler friends help him.
But there is a catch in the plot. This whole affair has been going on for the four long years and all this while Rahul has not
succeeded in confessing his love to Sandhya. And sadly, Sandhya seems to be oblivious of Rahul’s existence and his amorous advances.
Rahul’s love remains unrequited.
Sandhya is the daughter of a doting mother Rachna (Neena Kulkarni) and a peevish and alcoholic father Raj Patil (Aashish Vidyarthi).
She wants to realize her mother’s dreams of making it big in life. Therefore she is totally concentrated on her studies.
On the other hand Rahul does not even give a fig for anything but wooing his ladylove. Rahul’s elder brother Dr. Tiwari tries to put
some sense into him but to no use. Rahul’s body mind and senses seem to be totally captivated with his love for Sandhya.
But then the question arises, “Is this what Love is?” (Kya Yehi Pyar Hai). To spend days playing truant at college, neglecting
studies, not caring a heck for your family and being lost in daydreams and romantic fantasies? Will wayward Rahul realize the
admonition of his elder brother and see the futility of his actions? Will he find a better purpose to his life than chasing a girl who
doesn’t even care to cast him a second glance?
After giving two hit films Amisha Patel seems to be on the downslide with three shoddy flicks to her name. “Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai” shows
her as the self-assured girl who doesn’t fancy painting the town red with her lover boy. Throughout the flick she wears the stern
expression on her face and hardly displays an impressive range of histrionics. Pitched opposite her Aftab Shivdasani sort of
disappoints in his role of a carefree slaphappy Romeo. It will certainly take some time for him to come of age as a mature actor.
The film also has gorgeous Anupama Verma playing a cameo as Neha, Rahul’s close friend who helps him to express his feelings to
Sandhya.
K. Murli Mohan Rao, the director of flicks like Anari, Bandhan and Prem Qaidi , probably wanted to bring some freshness into
the stale and stereotyped love story angle and therefore made unrequited love the main theme of the flick. But sadly he has not been
able to make an emotional film. The sentiments in the film are slushy and hardly tug at one’s heart. |
