Synopsis
It is easy to fall in love but difficult to pay love’s bills. “Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega” is a feel-good film about three guys who would go to any extent for their love.

The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Fardeen Khan, Twinkle Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani and Johny Lever. The film, which has been produced by Ramgopal Varma and Nitin Manmohan, is second directorial attempt by the 24-year-old E. Niwas who made his debut with the gripping thriller “Shool”.

Prakash (Saif Ali Khan) is a handsome lad with an MBA degree under his belt and high aspirations to make it big in the corporate world. He is in love with Sapna (Sonali Bendre), daughter of a rich businessman. Prakash woos and weds Sapna but he is unable to win the respect of her father, who keeps taunting and humiliating him over mere trifles.

Fed up with the old man’s ways, Prakash decides to teach him a lesson. He hatches a plan to get Sapna kidnapped and swindle a part of his swelling fortunes through the ransom money.

Enter two small-time guys Rahul (Fardeen Khan) and Harilal aka Harry (Aftab Shivdasani) impersonating as the underworld bhais Sultan Ahmed and Khalid Mohammad. In reality they are out-of-job paying guests who are having a hard time making ends meet and paying love’s bills. Rahul is looking for a decent job to begin a life with his girlfriend Anjali (Twinkle Khanna) while Harry has even more loftier dreams although no money in pocket.

Rahul and Harry are convinced that they are going to be rich with a part of the ransom money. They make a plan and execute it. But it misfires. Sapna is kidnapped by the real bhais. Now the threesome face the challenge of saving Sapna’s life and bringing her back from the deadly clutches of underworld.

E. Niwas has interwoven different love stories together and embellished it with moments of light-hearted comedy. The humor in the film is circumstantial and Johny Lever (Aslam Bhai) is the surprise packet of the film. Vishal’s music is peppy and Abbas Tyrewala’s lyrics has a tapori feel that gels beautifully with the film’s theme.

Review

Love multiplied by crime equals fun – so goes the title of one of the songs in the film. The equation also captures the essence of the film. When three slap-happy lovelorn lads go astray and take law in their hands for the heck of a few millions and take Sapna captive, that’s when the fun begins. But if anything can go wrong then it will. Sapna’s life is endangered when the real baddies enter the picture.

E. Niwas’ directorial debut “Shool” was a serious movie and didn’t do well at the box office but “Love Ke Liye..” shows his adeptness in handling a comic subject. The characters in the film are not larger-than-life superheroes but ordinary street-smart mortals whose moral values dwindle in the face of impecunious circumstances.

Fardeen Khan does look funny impersonating the wishy-washy gunda trying desperately to make some money (whatever way) so that he could grease a few palms and get a decent job. Equally comical is Aftab Shivdasani who dreams of all the riches in the world but lives in rags. The chemistry between the duo is pretty impressive particularly when they are caught in some hilarious situations.

Saif Ali Khan has proved his aptitude for comedy in films like “Main Khiladi Tu Anari” (and others of the same genre) and maintains his ease before the camera. The two girls (Twinkle and Sonali) do their part of looking good to the hilt.

E. Niwas has also painted a funny picture of the nexus between Mumbai film industry and underworld in the film. In one scene Harry tries to convince an underworld don Aslam bhai (Johny Lever) about his chances of becoming a successful actor and woo Aishwarya Rai. In another sequence Aslam Bhai is duped by a self-confessed talent hunter Aaj Kapoor (Snehal Dhabi) who robs him of money with flimsy promises of roping in Rahman to compose music for their film.

“Love Ke Liye..” brings a welcome respite after the serious fare (like “Gadar” and “Lagaan”) that Bollywood’s celluloid factories turned out recently. The film is unabashedly light-hearted and funny and will have you in splits.

Rating: Worth a watch.
