Review

Based on well-known novelist Sujatha's story, Nilaakalam is director A R Gandhikrishna's debut film. Gandhikrishna didn't want to take any chances with his debut film and has worked overtime with the script. Result. A highly absorbing family entertainment.

Nila is the daughter of a rich and busy actress Veni. Completely neglected by her mother, Nila makes friends with a poor boy, a mechanic by profession, in the neighborhood. One day they go for a picnic in Nila's car and lose their way. Worried Veni lodges a complaint with the police. Even as police start frantic search another boy joins Nila and her friend and life becomes a roller-coaster adventure for the threesome.

However, happiness doesn't last long for them. Some bad elements realizing the identity of Nila try to take advantage of the situation for their selfish interests. On the other hand, the police are on a hot chase of them. Director Gandhikrishna keeps the audience on the edge of their seats before Nila is restored to her mother. But she loses her friends as police have sent them to remand home.

Gandhikrishna successfully highlights the gap between the haves and have-nots. The gist of Sujatha's story is our society's attitude towards friendship between the rich and poor. Nilaakalam stunningly portrays this attitude.

No praise is high for the brilliant and natural performance of child artistes Ranjini, Dinesh and Udayaraj.
