Synopsis
Actor-turned-director Anupam Kher’s directorial debut Om Jai Jagdish is a heart warming story of three brothers and the events
that turn their life around.
Anil Kapoor plays the elder of the three brothers Om, a mature and sensible man who is more of a fatherly figure for his two younger
brothers – Jai (Fardeen Khan) and Jagdish (Abhishek Bachchan).
Om works for a music company and has an exceptional eye for spotting talent. He has married his ladylove Ayesha (Mahima Chaudhary),
who works as MTV VJ.
Jai, on the other hand, has a creative mind and aspires to design and engineer a new car that he hopes will change the automobile
industry. He is head-over-heels in love with Neetu (Urmila), the snooty daughter of wealthy NRI parents.
Last but not the least, Jagdish (Abhishek) is a college student and a computer nerd who likes to hack into sites. He is enamoured of a
fellow student Pooja (Tara Sharma).
Om has complete confidence in Jai’s genius and spares no effort in giving him the best possible education. For this he takes hefty
loans from his company and finds himself neck-deep in debt. And when Jagdish expresses his desire to do an expensive computer course,
Om has no other option but to say no. Things get worse after Jagdish is accused of hacking into college computer and stealing the
question paper.
A shocked Om asks Jagdish to leave the house. On the other hand, Jai too spells out his decision to go abroad to realize his long
cherished dream of becoming an automobile engineer. And the tight knit family of three bothers collapses like a house of cards.
Will the once-inseparable brothers part ways, never to meet again? Or will the twist of fate bring them back together again?
Review
Om Jai Jagdish has a right mix of realism and Bollywood gloss. Anupam Kher, film's director, convincingly creates the ambience
of a happy family comprising of three brothers with almost contradictory qualities.
While Om (Anil) is a mature man with deeply rooted Indian values and respect for joint family system, Jai (Fardeen) is an ambitious
young guy who wants to settle alone in US with his girlfriend Neetu (Urmila). And Jagdish (Abhishek) is a carefree youngster without
any worries in the world.
The film is a family entertainer with interesting twists but it lacks the intensity to bind a viewer. It harps a little too much on
traditional values and gets mushy whenever there is an emotional outburst in the story.
Yet the main pulling force of Om Jai Jagdish is its star-studded cast. Anil Kapoor does his big brother act believably and
Abhishek too portrays a callow and vulnerable youngster with ease. Performances by Fardeen Khan and the film’s female cast (Mahima,
Urmila and Tara Sharma) are average.
The film, besides being Anupam Kher’s directorial debut, also marks the return of veteran actress Waheeda Rahman to the silver screen
in a motherly role. |
