Pyaar Diwana Hota Hai (Romance Movie ,2002)

Starring

Govinda .... Sunder
Rani Mukherjee .... Payal

Director : Kirti Kumar

Review

Slapstick comedian Govinda and Rani Mukherji make swell of a pair playing pranks and love tricks on each other in Kirti Kumar’s latest comic flick “Pyaar Diwana Hota Hai”. The film also has Om Puri, Apoorva Agnihotri and Johny Lever in small roles.

“Pyaar Diwana Hota hai” revolves around Sunder (Govinda), a small-town guy who comes to Delhi to make his ends meet. Using his painting talent he snaps a job as a billboard painter. Now all he yearns for is a comfortable life with a woman of his dreams. Little does he know how destiny will put him in front of her!

Payal (Rani Mukherji) is a beautiful US-bred girl with a special liking for Indian classical dances. Her dance teacher in India has told her to particularly observe the facial expressions of the mute people if she wants to be a good danseuse.

Coincidentally, when Sunder bumps into Payal he is too dumbfounded to utter even a word. But Payal construes it in a different way. She takes Sunder’s silence as his handicap, thinks that he is a mute and begins observing his facial expressions thoroughly. Sunder too does not want to break her wrong notion for the fear of losing her friendship.

Slowly Payal begins to understand the man inside Sunder. She appreciates his painting talent and holds an exhibition of his works. She also takes him to the speech therapist Dr. S. Puri (Om Puri) but to no use. Sunder remains mute as a rock. All this while they both keep coming closer to each other until their friendship culminates into love.

But the question before Sunder is how to tell truth to Payal that he not a mute? How will she react when this bitter truth alights upon her?

“Pyaar Diwana Hota Hai” is temperamental in progress with an interesting blend of puerile jokes and crass pranks. Although the blunt-edged humor (typical of Govinda films) does invoke laughter, deliberately framed sequences make the movie quite dull and low on hilarity.

The instant chemistry between Govinda and Rani Mukherji is evident from their first scene together in the film. While Govinda takes to his role as a fish takes to water Rani too shows the potential and aptitude to match Chi Chi’s sleek comic timing in equal stead. However, Johny Lever’s crude comic moments hardly bring a wrinkle to one’s belly.
