Review

Noted producer Vashu Bhagnani, who broke the spell of flops in Bollywood with “Mujhe Kuchh Kehna Hai” returns with another candyfloss love story in his latest production “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein”.

The film, remake of the hit Tamil flick “Minnale” stars Miss Asia Pacific Diya Mirza in a glamorous debut opposite S. Madhavan, who has already established credentials as ‘the Hrithik of the south’.

Gautham Mennon, who also wielded the megaphone for the film’s Tamil version, directs the film.

Madhav Shastri (Madhavan) aka Maddy is a slaphappy lad studying mechanical engineering in college. As a carefree juvenile he likes to play truant at college and pick up fights over mere trivialities. Madhav’s bully nature wins him some adversaries in college. Among them is Rajeev Sharma (Saif Ali Khan).

A slight tiff between the two gets Rajeev suspended from the college. But once the college is over everything is conveniently forgotten. Madhav undergoes a transition and matures into a goody-goody fellow.

The guy who never believed in anything called love falls head over heels for a gorgeous girl Reena Malhotra (Diya Mirza).

Armed with tips (to woo Reena) from his friendly dad DD (Anupam Kher) and favorite sidekick Keki (Hrajesh Virjee) Maddy makes amorous advances but soon gets a shock when he comes to know that the lady of his dreams is already engaged to someone else.

But, thankfully, there is a respite for Maddy!!

Reena has never seen her fiancé and Maddy (madly in love with her) decides to take the advantage of this situation. He steps in impersonating as her fiancé. After a couple of songs and a few dates the two are blissfully in love with each other.

The lovebirds’ heavenly bliss is broken when the real Mc coy, Reena’s fiancé makes an appearance. What’s more, to make the matters worse the guy happens to be none other than Maddy’s archrival in college Rajeev.

Now the question is – what will happen to Reena’s feelings for Maddy once the ugly truth alights on her? And will Maddy be able to fight against all the odds and win back Reena’s love and her shaken confidence in him?

In spite of its realistic look RHTDM is a stereotypical syrupy romantic tale that has been said many times before on screen. Its story is trite and the performance by the starcast is marred with frequent hamming.

Madhavan may have been a superstar down south but he doesn’t have the looks nor the talent to make it to Bollywood’s big league. Diya Mirza fails to shine in her debut performance and needs to broaden her emotive range. Only Saif Khan maintains his customary ease before the camera but is wasted in a role that relegates him to the margins.

The film’s music by Harris Jairaj is catchy and could prove to be a bit of a saving grace for the film.
