The story of ‘Sooryavansham’ is about a father who treats his son like a servant. He does not agree to anything his son does. The son,
on the other hand, tries everything to make his father happy and win his favour.
Thakur Bhanupratap Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is a highly honourable man who is so powerful that he can decide any body’s future in his
community. All are indebted by the good done to them by him but he finds no satisfaction in his youngest son Hira (Amitabh Bachchan).
He treats him worst than a servant.
Bhanupratap invites the enmity of another Thakur, Deshraj Singh (Mukesh Rishi) when he sends him to jail on the attempt of raping a
house cleaner. Deshraj swears enmity and keeps that for his future reference when he can hit back. Here again, Bhanupratap becomes
kind of a semi-god in the eyes of the public.
Hira’s younger sister is to get married to a lawyer so some guests arrive at their bungalow. The guests consist of Radha, (debutante
Soundarya) Retd. Major Ranjit Singh (Kader Khan), the groom and his parents. Hira is mistaken for a servant and he with Hira’s friend
Dharmendra (Anupam Kher) is treated very badly.
Hira is a humble person who forgets and forgives people easily. He is one of those people who believe in everyone and get hurt on the
bargain. Dharmendra or Mindra is his best friend and he finds solace in him.
Radha realises her mistake when she comes to know of Hira’s true identity. She finds herself attracted towards him and so in the flash
back, Mindra tells her about Hira's past life. Hira was in love with a girl called Gauri who had been adopted by Bhanupratap Singh.
This love developed right since his childhood.
Once, when the teacher beats Gauri for not completing her homework, Hira takes out the rage by hitting the teacher back.
After that incident, Hira stops going to school. Gauri is sent to a hostel. But Hira’s love blooms. When Bhanupratap comes to know of
this, he decides to get them married. But Gauri, who is well educated and a ‘modern girl’ cannot marry an illiterate villager. So she
insults him but as the humble man he is, he agrees not to marry. Bhanupratap fails to see the reason. He blames Hira for everything.
Hira loses all his father’s approval.
When Radha comes to know all this, she feels more in love with Hira. After some typical resistance, Hira responds positively to her
overtures. Radha's mother does not this match. She fixes her marriage in hurry with Deshraj's son Arjun (Imran Khan). Hira takes away
Radha on her wedding day and this displeases the old man all the more. He throws them from his home and they start a new life of their
own. Hira gets himself a job as a coolie in a bus.
Radha comes to know of all this. She gets angry. But keeps her cool and encourages Hira to buy a bus of his own. So, they buy an old
‘khatara’ bus with the money given by Ranjit Singh. Now Radha, Hira, Mindra and their Uncle Ranjit Singh set the bus on road.
Meanwhile, Radha carries on with her IAS studies. Hira gradually becomes rich. He owns a fleet of buses, companies and many more
things. He gets educated. His wife becomes the new Collector of their district.
Now, the story takes a turn. Being a Collecto
