Synopsis
Tenali, the much-trumpeted Deepawali release, is packed with all the necessary box-office ingredients, including pre-release hype. For
all the big names in the movie, film-buffs expect nothing less than a sumptuous treat from Director K S Ravikumar. Well-delineated
plot, flawless script, a story laced with comedy, exciting music and sensuous dance numbers. You name it, Tenali has it.
Tenali Soman, a Sri Lankan Tamil, is mentally deranged. His relatives bring him to India. Tenali carries with him the grisly memories
of war. He lost his father in the war and his mother was gang-raped.
Tenali is referred to Dr. Kailash, a big-hearted man who treats his patients like his family members. Tenali mingles with the doctor’s
family and soon becomes a part of it. It was during a picnic trip that Tenali happened to rescue Dr Kailash’s sister, Janaki from
anti-social elements. He becomes a hero in her eyes and romance blossoms.
Perturbed by the affair between his sister and the patient, Dr. Kailash tries all the tricks of the trade to separate the lovers. But
all his attempts boomerang.
Kamal Hasan and Jayaram enact the roles of Tenali Soman and Dr Kailash respectively. The duo had appeared together earlier in a
Malayalam film Chanakyan years back and complimented each other. Kamal fans haven’t had the pleasure of watching their hero in
a comic role for some time now and expect him to take them for a joyride. Jayaram, on the other hand, is equally adept in hilarious
episodes and is expected to give Kamal tough competition.
Jyothika had created a stir by wresting the heroine’s role from Simran. Still a new kid on the block, it is to be seen whether chubby
Jyothika would cast a spell over the audience. Devayani, who is now talk of the town for her sterling performance in Bharati
comes in as Jayaram’s wife, Jalaja. In a cameo role Meena appears as Meena the actress.
A R Rahman’s music is as good as it has always been. Priyan is the cinematographer and K Thanigachalam handles the editing.
What makes Tenali the most eagerly awaited film is Kamal’s sensuous kissing scene with Jyothika after his smooching scene with
Rani Mukherjee in Hey Ram |
